Camden to host celebration day to honour borough’s Windrush pioneers

Camden is hosting a Windrush Celebration Day on Sunday 25 June to celebrate the borough’s Windrush generation and showcase its Caribbean heritage, culture, and communities.

This month, Camden is celebrating 75 years since the arrival of HMS Windrush into Britain, with a whole host of activities, events, and exhibitions open to all.

Communities are invited to the main event ‘The Homecoming: Camden’s Windrush 75 Celebration’ which will have an amazing line up of live music performances from established and emerging local talent, sports activities, Caribbean food vendors, arts and crafts stalls, and much more.

Musical special guests performing on the day include Queen of Lovers Rock Carroll Thompson, Jazzie B from Soul II Soul, Dave Barker of Double Barrel fame and the Reggae Choir.

The event is taking place on Talacre Town Green which has strong links to local Windrush Pioneers. The area was transformed by campaigner Jerry Williams, who was part of the Windrush Generation and Camden’s first Black mayor, from a bomb site into a space for the community to enjoy.

Other celebration events taking place this month include:

  • A live music performance from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and a Windrush Generation composer taking place at Kentish Town Library on Thursday 22 June, 1pm to 3pm.
  • A range of special events, including fun games, activities and storytelling at Camden libraries from Thursday 22 June to Saturday 8 July.
  • The Caribbean Front Room installation. The installation – which is a key part of the Caribbean Windrush experience – explores the front room and the crucial role it played in bringing the community together. This is on display at Camden Black British History community hub, 18 Malden Road, NW5 3HN, up until Friday 28 July.
  • A three-part podcast featuring interviews with Windrush descendants, community leaders, activists and experts to explore the history of the Windrush generation, the injustices they faced, and their ongoing struggles for justice, hosted by Radio 1Xtra broadcaster Swarzy Macaly.
