A pedestrian-only high street to help overcrowding in Camden Town
Head out of Camden Town underground station and you’ll have to be prepared by the number of people who’ve had the same idea to visit Camden Town for the day. Many of those arriving are keen to visit the famous Camden Market as well as Camden’s vast offerings of bars, restaurants, and music venues.
The fact that the sidewalks get so busy with pedestrians, all moving at a snails’ pace, has made Camden Council consider their options. One of those options, which will now come into place, is to pedestrianise Camden High Street.

From the Junction at Parkway and Kentish Town Road up to where Jamestown Road and Hawley Crescent meets will be pedestrianised for a trial that will last 18 months.
The buses that usually go up Camden High Street will be rerouted up Kentish Town Road and Hawley Crescent.
The trial us due to begin later in 2025, and with up to 40,000 people on Camden High Street at peak times this will surely help the flow of pedestrian traffic in the area.
Cycle lanes will be set up so cyclists heading to Chalk Farm and beyond will still have access to the roads.
The significant overcrowding in Camden Town seems to have a solution, and the trial period will prove if this is a valid solution.
